I have had Golden Retrievers for 6 years here in Mauritius. I am aware of the presence of heartworm and have treated my dogs for it but I must confess that I have not been religious about it. Today I took my 3 dogs to the vet for their annual vaccine boosters. I casually mentioned tomy vet that my one bitch spends allot of time panting and breathless, even in the a/c. My vet asked me whether I was giving them preventative heartworm tablets and I confessed that I had not been too diligent about it. I am hoping that the puffing and panting is just as a result of the heat/humidity but I decided to do some reading about heartworm anyhow and was very alarmed to learn what I did. By the time you actually realise your dog is infected, the worms have already done damage to the heart, lungs and possibly other organs. Aside from coughing, dogs suffering from heartworm tend to be very intolerant with exercises and with any other similar physical activities. Certain dogs can be very active however. These are the reasons why dog owners tend to be complacent about this disease, only to find out later on that its effects can’t be reversed even by the most trained veterinarian.
Note heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes from one dog to another so all your dogs must be treated.
My message is this: PLEASE GIVE PREVENTATIVE MEDS TO YOUR DOGS FOR HEARTWORM RATHER THAN LOSE YOUR DOG TO THIS TERRIBLE PARASITE!
